The five days of Diwali 2027
Diwali is not a single day but a five-day festival in much of North India. Based on the 29 October main day, the 2027 sequence is expected to run as follows (regional calendars can shift a day):
- Dhanteras – around Wednesday 27 October: a traditional day to buy gold, silver or new kitchenware.
- Naraka Chaturdashi / Choti Diwali – around Thursday 28 October: early-morning baths, and the main Deepavali day in South India and Singapore.
- Lakshmi Puja (Diwali) – Friday 29 October: lamps, prayers to the goddess Lakshmi and fireworks.
- Govardhan Puja / Annakut – Saturday 30 October: food offerings; in Gujarat, the Hindu New Year.
- Bhai Dooj – Sunday 31 October: siblings exchange gifts and blessings.
Diwali dates 2025–2030
| Year | Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) |
|---|---|
| 2025 | Monday 20 October 2025 |
| 2026 | Sunday 8 November 2026 |
| 2027 | Friday 29 October 2027 |
| 2028 | Tuesday 17 October 2028 |
| 2029 | Monday 5 November 2029 |
| 2030 | Saturday 26 October 2030 (expected) |
The 2030 date is an expected date — published calendars differ between 25 and 26 October. Diwali falls on the new moon (amavasya) of the Hindu month of Kartika (Ashvin in the southern calendar), which is why it always lands between mid-October and mid-November.
Why Singapore and India can differ by a day
A new moon does not begin at midnight. When the lunar day of amavasya starts in the afternoon, North Indian tradition generally celebrates Lakshmi Puja that evening, while South Indian and Tamil tradition, followed in Singapore and Malaysia, marks Deepavali on the morning of Naraka Chaturdashi. In 2027, that puts Singapore's public holiday on 28 October and India's main night on 29 October.
How Diwali is celebrated
The name comes from the Sanskrit deepavali, "row of lamps". Homes are cleaned and decorated with clay lamps (diyas), electric lights and coloured patterns called rangoli. Families pray to Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, and to Ganesha; exchange sweets and dried fruit; and wear new clothes. For many Hindus it celebrates Rama's return to Ayodhya; Jains mark the nirvana of Mahavira; and Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas on the same day.
Fireworks are part of the tradition, but several Indian cities, including Delhi, restrict them because of the air pollution that peaks in late autumn.
