How the date of Easter is calculated
Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the "paschal full moon", the first ecclesiastical full moon on or after 21 March. The rule was set in the early church so that Easter would follow Passover and the spring equinox. Churches use fixed tables rather than the real Moon, so the result can differ slightly from astronomy, but it means the date can always be worked out in advance: Western Easter can fall anywhere from 22 March to 25 April.
In 2027 the paschal full moon falls on Monday 22 March, so Easter is the following Sunday, 28 March — one of the earlier Easters of the decade. We calculate Western Easter with the standard Gregorian computus, the same algorithm used by church calendars.
Why Orthodox Easter is often later
Eastern Orthodox churches use the same rule but apply it to the older Julian calendar, which is currently 13 days behind the Gregorian one. Most years, Orthodox Easter is one or more weeks after Western Easter; in some years, such as 2025 and 2028, the two dates coincide. In 2027 there is a five-week gap: 28 March in the West and 2 May for Orthodox Christians in Greece, Cyprus, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Russia, Ukraine and Georgia.

Easter traditions
For Christians, Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus and ends the 40 days of Lent, which in 2027 begins on Ash Wednesday, 10 February. Holy Week starts with Palm Sunday on 21 March. Traditions vary: chocolate eggs and egg hunts in the UK, the US and Australia; dramatic Holy Week processions in Seville and Malaga; the papal Easter Mass in St Peter's Square; red-dyed eggs and midnight candlelit services in Greece.
Planning a trip around Easter 2027
Because Easter 2027 is early, it overlaps with many school spring holidays in late March. Flights and hotels in southern Europe get busy, and Holy Week processions in Spain draw large crowds. Shops in Germany, Austria and much of Europe close on Good Friday and Easter Monday. If you want a long break, see our long weekends 2027 planner — taking four days off around Easter gives ten days in a row in the UK.
