How the numbers are worked out
Day of the year counts 1 January as day 1. Days left counts the days after today up to and including 31 December, so on 31 December the answer is 0. A normal year has 365 days; a leap year such as 2028 has 366, with the extra day on 29 February. The percentage of the year is based on the exact time, so it moves through the day.
