How the date is set

In the United States, Thanksgiving has been fixed by federal law since 1941 as the fourth Thursday of November, so it falls between 22 and 28 November. In Canada, Thanksgiving is the second Monday of October and is a statutory holiday in most provinces. Many American employers also give the Friday after Thanksgiving off, creating a four-day weekend, although that Friday is not a federal holiday.

The busiest travel days of the US year

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after are among the busiest days for US air travel, and highways are heavily congested on Wednesday afternoon. Prices for domestic flights peak for those dates. If you are visiting the US, note that most shops, offices and many restaurants close on Thanksgiving Day itself, while the next day — Black Friday — brings the biggest shopping sales of the year and the start of the Christmas season.

Other harvest festivals

Thanksgiving is one of many harvest celebrations. The Mid-Autumn Festival and Korea's Chuseok fall in September or early October, and Japan has a national Labour Thanksgiving Day on 23 November.
