How observed dates work

Under the rules used by the Office of Personnel Management, when a federal holiday falls on a Saturday, federal employees get the preceding Friday off; when it falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is the holiday. That is why 31 December 2027 appears on this list: New Year's Day 2028 is a Saturday, so it is observed on the last Friday of 2027. Private employers are not required to follow federal holidays, but most banks and many businesses do.

Long weekends in 2027

Ten of the twelve holiday dates in 2027 fall on a Monday or a Friday, so they create three-day weekends: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington's Birthday (Presidents' Day), Memorial Day, Juneteenth (observed), Independence Day (observed), Labor Day, Columbus Day, and the two observed Fridays in late December. Veterans Day (11 November) falls on a Thursday. Thanksgiving on 25 November creates a four-day weekend for anyone who also has Friday off. The two Fridays at the end of December give back-to-back three-day weekends over Christmas and New Year. More ideas are in our long weekends 2027 planner.

Holidays that are not federal

Good Friday (26 March 2027), Black Friday, Election Day and Lincoln's Birthday are holidays in some states or for some employers but not for the federal government. Columbus Day is also observed as Indigenous Peoples' Day in many states and cities. For counting working days, try the business days calculator with US holidays switched on.
